Scale & Polish

The foundation of a brilliant smile and lasting oral health often lies in the basics. Among these essential dental care routines is our scale and polish cleaning — a cornerstone of dental hygiene. At Medinet Dental Surgery, we offer gentle and thorough scale and polish services to ensure your teeth sparkle and your gums stay healthy.

What is a scale and polish cleaning?

A scale and polish is a routine dental cleaning procedure. It’s a two-part process that involves removing tartar and plaque that builds up on your teeth over time, especially near the gum line. We then polish the teeth to ensure the surfaces are smooth, making it more difficult for plaque to accumulate in the future.

How does it work?

During your visit, we’ll first assess the condition of your teeth and gums. Then we start the cleaning:

  • Using an ultrasonic instrument, we gently break down the tartar and wash it away.
  • We also use a scraper to manually remove any remaining tartar between the teeth and under the gum line/
  • We then use a polishing tooth and special dental paste to smooth the surface of the teeth.
  • The final step is rinsing the last of the debris and paste.

Do I need a scale and polish if I brush my teeth every day?

Absolutely! Daily brushing and flossing, while essential, don’t always remove all the plaque, especially in hard-to-reach areas. Over time, this plaque can harden into tartar, which is not only aesthetically unpleasing but can also lead to gum diseases like gingivitis.

Regular scale and polish cleanings help prevent these complications and keep your teeth shining and healthy.

How often should I have a scale and polish?

Usually, we recommend a scale and polish every six months in line with your dental check-ups. However, depending on individual health conditions, some might benefit from more frequent cleanings.

I’m terrified of the dentist — is the procedure painful?

Rest assured, our scale and polish cleaning is designed to be as comfortable as possible. While you may feel some sensations during the scaling process, it should not be painful.

At Medinet Dental Surgery, your comfort is our priority. Our compassionate team will ensure you feel at ease throughout the session and address any concerns you might have.
